Sky streaming deal to help St Mirren fans watch behind closed doors matches

Buddies fans will be able to watch their beloved club from the comfort of their own sofa next season.

It is widely expected the new Scottish Premiership campaign will start with games behind closed doors, leaving Saints fans unable to get back inside the Simple Digital Arena until the country is better equipped to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Scottish Premiership clubs will now be able to live stream matches and sell virtual season tickets after a deal was struck with Sky Sports yesterday.

The SPFL have also reached a settlement with Sky, of around £1.5 million over the next five years, for games that were not broadcast when last season was cut short.

The new top-flight campaign is scheduled to start on August 1, with Sky’s new £160 million five-year deal allowing them to show 48 top flight games each season.

Thanks to the new agreement, all other matches will be allowed to be streamed by clubs and this should provide a vital income stream with gate cash curtailed for the foreseeable.

The Scottish FA will lift football’s suspension next Thursday, which will allow St Mirren to resume non-contact training in small groups.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “This is an innovative and pragmatic solution to the challenges posed by Covid-19 and I’m grateful for the flexibility shown by our clubs and by Sky Sports.”
