Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur's victory over Manchester City was "just papering over the cracks"
Jose Mourinho's side came away with a 2-0 victory on Sunday thanks to second-half goals from Steven Bergwijn and Heung-Min Son after Oleksandr Zinchenko was sent off.
Hugo Lloris played a key role in the victory, saving a first-half penalty from Ilkay Gundogan and keeping out Sergio Aguero as City turned the screw.
The result moved Spurs to within four points of fourth-place Chelsea after they dropped points at Leicester City.
Tottenham remain very much in the race for Champions League football this season, alongside Sheffield United, Wolves and Manchester United.
However, former Arsenal midfield Merson is yet to be convinced by Mourinho at Tottenham and believes that Sunday's result is not a true reflection of the level his side are currently playing at.
"It was a big win, but it just papered over the cracks, they are a million miles behind - it could have been 6-0 or 7-0 on any other day," he told Sky Sports.
"They rode their luck, but give them credit, they stuck to the game plan and hung in there and got their lucky breaks. And a great goal, as soon as the lad hits it, he is running away as he knows it is a goal.
"But you cannot sit there and say, 'Mourinho is doing great.' It was just an absolute run around in my opinion.
"He was brought in to get in the top four and that was a big result towards that though…"
