Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill has stated that the reason behind Tottenham's summer transfer activity is to add some solidity to Jose Mourinho's side.
Spurs have dipped into the market to sign full-back Matt Doherty from Wolves, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton and Joe Hart on a free transfer following his exit from Burnley.
That has seen Mourinho improve his options in three key areas and, though none of the trio stand-out as potential match-winners, their importance has been assessed.
Cahill believes that Spurs already had a wealth of 'luxury' players and their books and, as such, required some more grit to improve the squad.
“He talked about physical and mental identification of profiling of players, so those three signings are because there’s a lot of luxury players in the team and he needs to sure it up," he told Sky Sports.
"He needs some solidity, so the guys can go off and create goals, and also so they can see off games.
"I really like this side of him - the way he’s adapting to football and his honesty, which is good for young and aspiring coaches.”
Spurs' Premier League campaign begins this afternoon against Carlo Ancelotti's Everton, another side who have made eye-catching additions in the market, with James Rodriguez and Allan among the summer arrivals on Merseyside.
The two sides last met back in July, with Michael Keane's own goal proving to be the difference as the game finished 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
