Sky Sports pundit forewarned about Valentino Lazaro's defending ahead of Crystal Palace red card

When Valentino Lazaro hauled down Wilfried Zaha with the Crystal Palace forward bearing down on Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, there was little argument that he deserved a straight red card.

The Ivorian international could well have made it 2-0 with just the Slovakian international goalkeeper between him and the goal and the incident capped off a brutal start to Lazaro's loan spell on Tyneside.

The Inter Milan wing-back impressed in the first half of his full debut last week but was then at fault for Arsenal's first two goals. Similarly, yesterday, Steve Bruce was impressed with much of the Austrian international's work but a straight red card means he will now be suspended for next weekend's visit of Burnley.

And as Zaha faced up Lazaro in the one-on-one situation, it would have left a lot of Newcastle fans casting their mind back to last week when Bukayo Saka nutmegged him before laying on Arsenal's second goal.

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson was highly critical of Lazaro's defending in the build-up to the Crystal Palace game on Gillette Soccer Saturday.

In the end, his criticism proved to be a forewarning of what was to come at Selhurst Park, with Lazaro clearly not learning from his mistake a week ago.

"His body shape was all wrong when you are defending in there," Thompson said.

"[After watching Bukayo Saka nutmeg Lazaro] Do I feel sorry for players like that?

"He is giving him the opportunity because he is so square on. He doesn't jockey him or show him the line, he literally gave him the opportunity to do that for him.

"It was a horror showing."
