Sky Sports pundit delivers verdict on 'lucky' Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea ahead of Brighton clash

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Maurizio Sarri is lucky to still be in charge at Chelsea.

The Italian has endured a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge with the Blues struggling to seal a place in the top four.

He was abused by fans during the Blues comeback 2-1 victory over Cardiff City on Sunday with many criticising the style of football.

Goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek sealed a controversial three points in Wales and Merson believes that the result saw Sarri escape the axe at Stamford Bridge.

Writing for Sky Sports, he explained: "It was a poor result for Brighton at home to Southampton on Saturday. The fact Cardiff lost was a real stroke of luck, but Chris Hughton and his side need to be careful.

Sarri transcript: Every word from Chelsea boss on starting Hudson-Odoi, fan criticism & more

"At Chelsea, I'm not sure about the manager. He's lucky to be in charge. Neil Warnock can say Cardiff were unlucky, well Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea were lucky.

"With the team he picked he'd have done well to keep his job had they lost at Cardiff.

Maurizio Sarri explains the reason for Chelsea's slump and it will stun fans

"Then there were the substitutions and the fact Callum Hudson-Odoi didn't get on. He was very fortunate in the end. Despite all the negativity they should still have enough to beat Brighton at Stamford Bridge."
