Sky Sports pundit criticises 'horrible' David De Gea error against Wolves

Former goalkeeper Matt Murray believes David de Gea was at fault for Wolves winning goal on Tuesday night.

Manchester United fell to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux on Tuesday night thanks in part to a Chris Smalling own goal.

United took an early lead through Scott McTominay before being pegged back for a goal from Diogo Jota. The defeat was a damaging blow to the club’s top four chances and left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer frustrated.

And for former custodian Murray, some of the responsibility fell on De Gea’s shoulders after he failed to claim a ball that dropped into the United penalty area.

Solskjaer reveals Manchester United Premier League top four points target

“Look, it’s a melee, it’s a scrappy goal, but Wolves won’t care,” Murray told Sky Sports.

“It came from Manchester United’s throw in but they work it well to get bodies into the box, into that area. Moutinho has real, real, quality and we’ve seen it all season. He’s won top honours with Portugal.

"Raul Jimenez has to take great credit there the way he gets in there, the strength he shows, could David de Gea come and spread a bit, I don’t know. I think that’s their first real attempt at goal in the half.

Why Ashley Young played in a back three for Manchester United vs Wolves

“It’s horrible but you’ve got to come. He can’t come for the first ball, it’s a fantastic ball in. When it drops down come and get everything, he’ll probably take stitches but you’ve got to be brave. I think now, take everything, but he turns his head away from it and it goes past him it trickles into the net.”

Speaking on the mistake, fellow pundit and former United midfielder Darren Fletcher added: "I think they both leave it for each other.

"I think David is expecting Chris Smalling to get it, I think Chris Smalling is expecting David to get it and neither of them do.

"The goal sums up United’s night, messy. It’s something they’re going to have to eradicate."
