Sky Sports apologise for Graeme Souness comments on Erik Lamela after Manchester United vs Tottenham

Sky Sports issued an apology for comments made by Graeme Souness after Manchester United's 6-1 thrashing by Tottenham Hotspur.

Souness criticised the "Latin" culture when talking about the clash between Erik Lamela and Anthony Martial, which saw the latter sent off.

United striker Martial retaliated after being pushed by Lamela, striking the Argentine in the face.

Lamela fell to the ground and referee Anthony Taylor gave Martial his marching orders, with the Spurs man escaping unpunished for his part in the incident.

Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Souness was not happy with Lamela's actions.

"If Martial is going then Lamela has to go," he said. "He raises his hands, Martial lashes out, it's like a tickle across your chops and he's gone down.

"It is pathetic. It's very Latin. If one goes, both have to go. It's pathetic.

"Is this what the English game is about? We, the Brits, do it differently.

"I've played in a Latin country, I've worked in Latin countries, I know how they see the game.

"Lamela will sleep well thinking he has done a great piece of work for his team. That is not us."

Sky Sports subsequently apologised to anybody who may have been offended by Souness' comments.

"Now I have to say before we go, earlier in the show we were critical of Erik Lamela's part in Anthony Martial's sending off in the Manchester United Spurs game," said presenter Dave Jones.

"We'd like to apologise for any offence that was caused and the stereotyping of the Latin culture."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also hit out at Lamela.

"The red is no excuse," said Solskjaer. "The boy might be having an operation on his throat, though!

"It is a bad reaction from Anthony. But if that (Lamela) was one of my players I'd hang him out to dry going down like that. He shouldn't react like that."
