Sky Sports apologise for Aberdeen goal blunder as Dave Cormack takes broadcaster to task over 22 strike salute

Sky Sports have issued an apology to Aberdeen after a bizarre pre-match video that riled up fans and brought a stinging rebuke from chairman Dave Cormack.

Ahead of the Pittodrie club's meeting with Celtic the Premiership's exclusive broadcaster put out a compilation video from meetings at Pittodrie.

It began with Ian Crocker saying: "In recent years this fixture has become one of the most significant showdowns in Scotland, a game that always has an edge."

However, the clip showed only Celtic goals going back to the Brendan Rodgers era, with a counter ticking off 22 strikes.

Many felt the video was disrespectful to Aberdeen and indeed the wider Scottish football community outwith Glasgow's big two, and the broadcaster has now made an official apology.

A joint statement on Monday evening said: "Aberdeen FC chairman Dave Cormack and Sky Sports Director of Football Gary Hughes held an open, constructive, and positive Zoom conversation this evening about yesterday’s tweet and the concerns raised by Aberdeen.

"While the tweet was part of a number of features within an hour long build-up and not intended to be used in isolation, Sky unreservedly apologised for any offence the tweet caused to Aberdeen and their fans.

"The apology has been accepted by the club.

"Sky Sports also outlined its plans and ambitions for the future of Scottish football and will work with Aberdeen to deliver these over the period of the exclusive contract with the SPFL."
