Sky Sports were forced to apologise live on air after fans at Salford vs Leeds sang about Jimmy Savile.
Microphones picked up the chants which are believed to have started by a small section of Salford supporters.
However, Leeds replied with their own song about Savile shortly before Sky's commentary team said sorry if any offence was caused.
They said: “Apologies if you were offended by anything you heard in the last few minutes.”
Disgraced children's entertainer Savile, who passed away in 2011, was born in Leeds and supporters often use him as a taunting mechanism in songs.
The Carabao Cup meeting on Tuesday night was the first time that Salford and Leeds have ever faced off against each other in competitive competition.
A number of Sky viewers expressed their displeasure at hearing the chants on social media.
One wrote: “Just watching the Salford v Leeds game and I'm sure the Salford fans have just been singing about Jimmy Savile - think that's a bit over the top.”
Another commented on Twitter : “Watching Leeds Utd Vs Salford on TV and the SJS chants have started (as usual) and the commentator has just said ‘I apologise if you are offended by what you’ve just heard’.
“Well I am bloody offended.”
Meanwhile, another viewer spotted: “Sky dubbing crowd noise to lessen the Leeds fans singing.”
