Sky Sports and Dave Jones respond to Gary Neville racism furore following Spurs vs Chelsea

Both Sky Sports and Dave Jones have responded to criticism over their intervention on Gary Neville when he was speaking about racism in the game.

Chelsea's victory at Tottenham was marred with the Blues' defender receiving racist abuse at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The incident led to step one of UEFA's anti-racism protocol being used.

Announcements over the tannoy warned fans that racism was "interfering with the game."

Following the match, Gary Neville gave an impassioned speech on the subject , talking about the problem in other parts of society, such as politics.

After Neville had had his say, Jones was told to add a disclaimer.

"I am compelled to say that they are the opinions of you, Gary Neville, and not thise of Sky Sports," he said. That is my duty."

The presenter and Sky Sports have since come under a lot of criticism for shutting down talk on such an important subject.

Both Jones and the channel have since taken to social media to apologise and give an explanation.

"I’m so sorry to have spoiled what was such an important discussion on racism tonight," Jones Tweeted .

"I had to intervene when Gary suggested the two main political parties were to blame - I didn’t make that clear enough. For that I apologise unreservedly.

"I would never purposefully shut down a discussion on racism. I’ve worked for Sky for over 20 years and know they share my view that racism of any kind should not be tolerated. That is not a debate. And that’s why I’m so very disappointed and sorry tonight."

Quoting the tweet, Sky Sports also reaffirmed their stance on the subject.

"Sky Sports is against racism of all forms in any walk of life and will continue to give a platform to eradicating this vile behaviour from society," they wrote.
