Sky set to show Premier League highlights on YouTube as fans are given a quicker way of watching their side

Fans of Newcastle United are set to be handed an easier opportunity to watch highlights of their side this season, as broadcaster Sky Sports are considering a controversial move that could impact the viewing figures of the BBC's Match of the Day programme.

According to a report in the Mail , the hierarchy at Sky are considering making Premier League highlights available in the immediate aftermath of games concluding.

The broadcaster are believed to be giving serious thought to broadcasting three-minute clips of key moments from games on YouTube in a controversial move which would see fans given the chance to watch highlights before the BBC show airs on a Saturday and Sunday night.

Sky have long held the clip based subscription package, but until now the broadcaster has opted against showing highlights of one of the biggest leagues in the world on their respective social media sites.

Although highlights have been available for Sky subscribers on their app and to subscribers to News UK publications.

Sources close to the move believe the change will have no impact on Match of the Day though, as the clips on YouTube will not be accompanied by expert analysis or any post match interviews.

Match of the Day were confirmed in January of last year of having retained the rights to screen highlights of Premier League matches in the UK until 2022, with a bid of £211.5million, a rise of £7.5m on the previous deal negotiated by the broadcaster.
