Sky re-sign guard Kahleah Copper

With Kahleah Copper’s elite speed and athleticism, the do-it-all guard could be a starter on many WNBA teams. And as a restricted free agent this offseason, she drew a lot of attention. Six teams reportedly were extremely interested in her.

But Copper, 25, feels she has some unfinished business in Chicago.

As expected, the Sky announced Saturday that they re-signed Copper. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Last season, Copper was the spark plug of the Sky’s second unit. In 34 games, she averaged 6.7 points and 1.9 rebounds.

Copper took her game to the next level in playoffs, averaging nine points and shooting 75 percent from the field. In the Sky’s second-round loss to the Aces, Copper was one of the most disruptive players on the court, and her 16 points tied a season high.

“I couldn’t be happier to be going back to Chicago,” Copper said in a statement. “Last season didn’t end the way we wanted, but with the chemistry we have, I can’t help but be anxious and excited to have another year together.”

With Copper’s signing, the Sky’s roster is nearly complete. All seven of their free agents have been accounted for.

Allie Quigley, Courtney Vandersloot and Stefanie Dolson have agreed to re-sign with the Sky, though they haven’t put ink to paper. The Sky traded center Astou Ndour, 2019 first-round pick Katie Lou Samuelson and their 2021 first-round pick to the Wings in two separate deals. In return, they acquired the Mercury’s 2021 first-round pick and forward Azura Stevens.

The Sky also signed point guard Sydney Colson, who likely will be Vandersloot’s backup because restricted free agent Jamierra Faulkner announced Friday that she’s missing the 2020 season as she rehabs from her most recent knee injury.
