Sky broadband customers urged to check if they've been hacked

Broadband customers have been warned after a recent breach saw millions of devices at risk of being hacked.

A flaw in Sky's routers was found by researcher Raf Fini from Pen Test Partners.

This means millions of customers could have had their online activity leaked, reports the Mirror.

It could be a common problem as people do not update the security on their router.

In May, the consumer watchdog Which? warned that a common flaw in people's routers was a lack of security updates.

Here's all you need to know about the breach - including how to find out if you've been affected.

What was the Sky breach?

Pen Test Partners said that people affected were easily exploited, having been drawn in by a scam email, designed to link someone to a website with malicious software on it.

From there, everything could be easily accessed, including passwords for banking sites.

There is no evidence so far that people's routers were actually exploited, but people are being encouraged to check.

The issue is reported to have taken up to 18 months to fix and around six million people were at risk.

Who was affected?

A Sky spokesperson said: "We take the safety and security of our customers very seriously.

"After being alerted to the risk, we began work on finding a remedy for the problem, and we can confirm that a fix has been delivered to all Sky manufactured products."

Pen Test Partner's Ken Munro told the BBC: "While the coronavirus pandemic put many internet service providers under pressure, as people moved to working from home, taking well over a year to fix an easily exploited security flaw simply isn't acceptable.

The models that were affected are as follows:

  • Sky Hub 3 (ER110)
  • Sky Hub 3.5 (ER115)
  • Booster 3 (EE120)
  • Sky Hub (SR101)
  • Sky Hub 4 (SR203)
  • Booster 4 (SE210)

How do I check if my router was hacked?

The vulnerability exploited by hackers that was found in the routers could have affected anyone who had not changed the routers' default admin password.

You can easily check if you had your outer hacked through a series of very simple steps:

First, you should check if your log-in credentials still work. If not, the hacker could have changed them.

You should then log into your router's dashboard. Noticing an unknown device on the network may indicate a hacker.

Receiving ransomware messages is also a tell-tale sign. These will ask for payment in order for you to regain access to your network.
