Sky and BT Sport to unveil new Premier League PPV service

With no clear idea on when football fans will be able to return to stadiums, alternative arrangements are currently being made among the UK's leading broadcasters.

Since the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to the 2019/20 season, all subsequent post-lockdown fixtures have been broadcast live across Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video, BBC and freeview channel Pick.

Heading into the 2020/21 season, comprehensive coverage was extended into September.

The original plan had been to slowly reintroduce live attendance in the month of October. Those plans have now been revised.

Generosity shown by the Premier League is now wearing thin. Handing out more of their product for 'free' is bad for business and, for broadcasters, this obviously spells a problem.

A revision on the original broadcasting rights deal for this current season was supposed to see 231 matches shown live across Sky, BT, Amazon and BBC.

Recent developments, or lack thereof, are now forcing a rethink.

While there has been no confirmation, the greatest compromise seems to point towards an additional pay-per-view service that is likely to face backlash from subscribers who would argue they already pay enough.

Another suggestion currently mooted is the potential for games to be available through Sky and BT's already-available mobile apps.

More details will be revealed in the coming days and weeks.

Sky and BT Sport are set to announce a new PPV service where fans can watch additional matches.
