Skins star Kathryn Prescott suffered life-changing injuries after being hit by truck

Skins star Kathryn Prescott is 'lucky to be alive' after being hit by a cement truck.

Kathryn, who played Emily Fitch in the coming of age teen drama in 2009, has had complex surgery after suffering broken legs and a broken pelvis.

The 30-year-old actress narrowly avoided paralysis after the accident in New York on September 7, says her twin Megan.

Megan, who played her character's twin Katie in Skins, broke the shocking news on social media.

"I received the most terrifying phone call I’ve ever received in my life on Tuesday evening. My twin sister Kathryn was hit by a cement truck while crossing a road in New York on the 7th September," she explained.

"After fighting through complex surgery some of Kathryn’s injuries include: broken pelvis in two places, both of her legs, her foot and her left hand.

"She is incredibly lucky to be alive. She narrowly avoided paralysis.

"The doctors are hopeful that she will make a full recovery but this will only be possible with the correct care right now."

This afternoon Megan updated followers with the news that she had been approved to travel to New York to see her sister.

Megan previously appealed for help after being turned down on her application to the US Embassy for exemption from the current restrictions banning any non-US citizens into the US.

"She is alone in New York with no family members. I need help getting to New York to support her recovery," she said.

"I will have to help her until she can start to walk again. I need to be there to help her with literally everything as she will be able to do incredibly little by herself.

"She will be in rehab for a very long time and will need 24/hr care even after she leaves the hospital."

She added: "I am double vaccinated, I had a PCR test yesterday and can fly at the drop of a hat. I have documents from the hospital confirming the extent of Kathryn’s injuries and am willing to do anything to get to her as soon as humanly possible," she said.

Sharing her delight at being able to travel to be with Kathryn she said: "Yesterday I was approved to travel to New York to see @k.prescott77

"I can’t thank everyone enough for all their help and support in this and I really don’t think I would have made it to Kat without the amazing support I have received.

"I will be able to be with Kathryn tomorrow and that is absolutely amazing but please take a minute to think about what’s happening to so many others right now who don’t have the luxury of so much support and who can’t get to their families.

"I am incredibly lucky but so many others won’t be.

"Thank you so much again."
