Skincare expert explains why you should never use a brush to apply foundation

Over the last few years, the make-up we wear, and the way we apply it, has changed an awful lot.

Back in the day, it used to be about scooping out Dream Matte Mousse three shades too dark and plastering it all over your face using your fingers - before applying some concealer on the lips to complete the look.

Nowadays, make-up lovers will prime, contour, bake and snatch their faces, using about 500 different sponges and brushes along the way. It's a lot of work.

But, while cosmetic gurus of today might look back at the days we applied our foundation with our fingers and shudder, according to one skincare expert, we had it right all along.

Skincare specialist Laura Andrew claims that the best way to apply foundation actually is by using our fingers, as applying the product with a brush could be causing skin irritation and redness.

"The natural warmth from your hands makes it easier to blend in the foundation with your fingers than with a brush on application," Laura told The Sun.

"Brushes can tug at the skin and cause friction, which can often result in more sensitivity and redness."

Not only that, the expert claims we should also be using our digits when it comes to concealer too, using our ring finger to "tap very gently" in order to cause less drag in the sensitive eye area.

When it comes to applying products such as eyeliner, Laura warns that we should avoid pulling too hard on the skin around our eyes. Instead she suggests using gel or liquid liners which "gently glide on the skin."
