Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand SKIMS has responded after a man was sentenced to prison for smuggling millions worth of cocaine in a shipment of its underwear and clothes.
Polish truck driver Jakob Jan Konkel was sentenced to 13 years in prison after authorities discovered 90 kilograms, equivalent to $11 million (AUD) worth, of cocaine concealed in SKIMS packages being delivered from the Netherlands to England.
Investigators found the truck had been specially adapted to conceal the cocaine within what was an otherwise legitimate delivery of 28 pallets of SKIMS products.
Despite the eye-watering value of the drugs, Konkel was reportedly offered just over $7 thousand (AUD) for the risky shipment, as part of what authorities called a global drug smuggling plot linked to organised transnational crime groups.
Though neither Kardashian nor the brand were implicated in the crime, SKIMS did release a statement addressing the situation and reiterating it had nothing to do with the smuggling plot.
“SKIMS is aware of the recent news involving a shipment with our products,” the statement to TMZ read.
“We want to be absolutely clear: SKIMS had no knowledge whatsoever about this criminal activity. We had no connection to the smuggling operation, the driver, or the truck.”
Fans’ reaction to the news was swift, with one joking that they were “pissed this wasn’t included with my SKIMS order” and others branding the story, “Keeping Up With The Kartel”.
“My bikinis arrive on Wednesday, we’ll see what’s in them lol,” another user wrote.
Konkel initially denied his involvement in the scheme in court before pleading guilty. “Your role was not peripheral or limited,” Judge Richard Wilkin said, per the BBC.
“It was a significant role in this large-scale, commercial operation.”
SKIMS has embattled many controversies since launching in 2019, including backlash over seemingly retouched ads featuring Kardashian’s body, outcry over Sabrina Carpenter’s campaign with the brand, and a royal roasting of its ‘reshaping’ face wrap.
