A skilled worker went "off the rails" when he found himself without a job during lockdown.
Mark McGeechan committed a series of crimes that included hitting a dog walker on the head with a bottle.
McGeechan, 32, of Gateside Road, Craigneuk, was jailed for nearly three years at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.
He admitted assaulting a man on Stanhope Place, Gowkthrapple, on April 25 last year.
An allegation that the bottle attack led to the victim being scarred for life was deleted.
McGeechan also admitted trying to kick a police officer on that occasion and illegal possession of scissors and cannabis in Motherwell on a later date.
He pleaded guilty to a fifth charge that stated he shouted abuse and threats at his ex-partner last August and September.
Defence agent Diarmid Bruce produced a psychologist's report that referred to "particular difficulties" in McGeechan's background.
Despite these, he had worked all over the world as a steel fabricator and is "highly thought of in the specialist steel industry".
Mr Bruce told the court: "Unfortunately, during lockdown last year he wasn't working and went off the rails in spectacular fashion.
"He sought solace in drink and drugs, and was behaving in a way that has not been typical of him."
There were, the lawyer insisted, alternatives to custody "at the higher end of the scale".
However, Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen said only prison was appropriate and jailed McGeechan for 33 months with immediate effect.
