A ski instructor accused of a "horrendous" attack in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains that left a woman and man in hospital will remain behind bars while he seeks legal advice.
British national Matthew James Williams, 28, is accused of attacking the pair in the early hours of the morning last Thursday as they returned home from a pub in the town of Jindabyne.
Police allege he knocked the man unconscious before sexually and physically assaulting the woman.
The pair's facial injuries were so severe that police initially believed there was more than one attacker.
However, police now say they believe Mr Williams is the sole perpetrator of the assaults.
He did not appear in person at Queanbeyan Local Court on Wednesday morning, despite the courtroom being crowded.
His defence lawyer Luke Vozella appeared on his behalf requesting a two-week adjournment so Mr Williams could seek further advice, and did not apply for bail.
Bail was formally refused and the matter will return to court later this month.
