Skerries woman's heartwarming tribute to Dublin Civil Defence heroes who helped her get to vital cancer appointments

A north Dublin couple have paid a glowing tribute to the Dublin Civil Defence heroes who came to the rescue in their hour of need.

Skerries couple Ray and Mary have had an extremely difficult year after Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in January.

Mary has visited various hospitals 40 times since her diagnosis with her devoted husband driving her long distances from the northside village.

But disaster struck two weeks ago when the couple's car broke down beyond repair on the way back from an appointment at St Luke's Hospital, Rathgar.

Mary had treatment scheduled at the southside hospital for the next six days and Mary was not fit enough to take trains or taxis.

The worried couple frantically tried to make alternative arrangements but only hit dead ends until it was suggested they contact the Civil Defence.

In an email to the body thanking them for their amazing response, Ray wrote: "I called and was dealt with by Bernie who within minutes had organised the transport.

"I found Bernie to be a very professional and caring person and she helped subsequently to arrange transport until I managed to source a car for Friday just gone.

"So on FIVE occasions the Civil Defence supported my wife and I and reduced stress and upset by providing us this support.

"Our driver was just amazing, so professional and supportive, was on time every time and even though on some visits was kept waiting he was nothing but friendly and engaging.

"I cannot thank these two professionals enough and it says volumes for the type of people in your staff.

"My wife and I are profoundly grateful for the help we received from your organisation. Thanks so much."

An absolutely amazing response from the Civil Defence team and here's hoping Mary makes a speedy recovery from her illness.
