'Skeletal' remains found in woods with investigation launched into 'unexplained' death

"Skeletal" human remains have been found in woods as police launched an investigation into the discovery.

Police were called the the scene near a stables in land in Fossway, Newcastle upon Tyne, at around 7pm on Thursday, ChronicleLive reports.

Officers remain at the scene and have taped off the surrounding area.

It is believed the remains were "skeletal" and efforts are being made to identify the individual.

The death is being treated as unexplained as detectives work to piece together what happened.

It is believed the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for Northumberland Police said: “At about 7pm on Thursday, we received a report that adult human remains had been found in a wooded area in Fossway, Walker.

“We are currently in the process of identifying the individual and at this stage are treating their death as unexplained.

“Officers remain at the scene at this time.”
