'Skeletal' remains found in wooded area in Walker as investigation launched into death

Human remains have been found in a wooded area of Walker.

Police officers received a report of human remains that had been found in a wooded area in Fossway, Walker at around 7pm on Thursday evening.

It is believed the remains found are skeletal.

Officers attended the scene on Thursday and have remained in the area since.

A large area has been taped off and police cars could be seen parked nearby on Friday evening.

Northumbria Police have now confirmed they are in the process of identifying the individual, who was found near a stables off Waverdale Avenue.

The force said they are treating the death as unexplained at this stage. It is believed the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At about 7pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report that adult human remains had been found in a wooded area in Fossway, Walker.

“We are currently in the process of identifying the individual and at this stage are treating their death as unexplained.

“Officers remain at the scene at this time.”
