Skegness Butlin's angers holidaymakers after hiking up its weekly prices up to £1,600

Butlin's has been criticised by holidaymakers for raising the prices of its summer breaks.

Screenshots of prices for the popular seaside park in Skegness were posted on its Facebook page.

They showed the costs of week-long stays at ‘silver apartments’ and ‘gold apartments’, which were between £925 and £1299.

Lincolnshire Live checked out Butlin’s’ website to see if it was true and at the time, discovered that it was actually higher.

A seven-night stay between August 13 and August 20 would set you back £1,122 for silver and £1,664 for gold.

Commenting on the post, Lauren Keir said: “They’re clearly capitalising on the fact people can’t go abroad.

“Haven has done the same, as have any caravan park around the country.”

Lynn Maindonald agreed, but said: “Prices are crazy at the moment, but the reality is that Butlin's need to at least break even and a lot of their costs are fixed costs so the reduced capacity is going to be significantly impacting them.

“With supply and demand, people are willing to pay these prices. Everywhere in the UK is the same.”

A Butlin’s spokesperson said: “We have seen an increase in demand for bookings, particularly into the summer holidays, and we expect this trend to continue as more guests look to holiday in the UK.

“With the uncertainty around travel, people want reassurance when booking their breaks. Our Butlin’s Promise means every holiday includes a lowest price guarantee and free amendments or cancellations.”

Josh Fawcett, who posted the screenshots, said this doesn’t correlate with the Butlin’s motto: “‘A week's holiday for a weeks wages’. That was what Billy himself said and believed, and that included food as at the time there was no self catering.

“How many working families today earn more than £1,300 a week? The average salary today is £31k per year according to the Office for National Statistics.

"That's roughly £585 per week. A week at Butlins including food can cost as much as £1,600 with food, three times the average wage.”
