Skateboarders could create 'legit street skating spot' beneath M32 motorway

An "unused" strip of concrete beneath the M32 could be repurposed as a "legit" street skateboarding spot.

A GoFundMe page has raised hundreds of pounds in hope of upgrading a space in Eastville into a sheltered spot for skaters.

The fundraiser, set up by Dan Higginson, read: "The plan is to build and install two metal benches at this unused space just next to Eastville Park in Bristol.

"The benches will be [approximately] 2.5 meters long and replicate transitional street furniture, making it feel like a legit street spot (only built by skaters for skaters).

"This fundraiser has been set up to raise funds to support the continued building, repairing and improvement of DIY skate facilities in Bristol.

"These spots provide an essential hub for Bristol's skate scene and offer a safe and sociable space for young people to exercise outdoors throughout the pandemic."

An exact location was not detailed but a CGI image of how the benches could look appeared to be just north of the Eastville Interchange, close to the junction where Stapleton Road meets Cottrell Road.

The fundraiser, attributed to Bristol Skatepark Collective, described skateboarding and BMX riding as "ideal activities under the current circumstances" as they do not involve any physical contact.

It adds: "The importance of outdoor exercise has never been more important which is why we are supporting the ongoing improvement of these facilities.

"This fundraiser will outline specific projects that we want to achieve and be completely transparent in where the funds go and the time frame it will take to achieve our goals.

'Incredible value for money'

"These projects are created from a passion for creating skate spaces and offer incredible value for money with all funds going towards materials."

The £250 target has already been reached within weeks of the page going live.

There is already a skate park located nearby beneath the M32 nearby, offering various ramps alongside part of Stapleton Road.

It was described as a "much-loved" space last March after part of the park was destroyed in a suspected arson attack.
