Skate: How to Do a Varial Kickflip

Flip tricks can be deceptively difficult to pull off in Skate 4. While they are some of the more common tricks you’ll learn early on during your time in San Vansterdam, the more advanced versions of flip tricks require several precise stick movements and button presses to perform. One of the more infamous flip tricks so far in Skate 4 is the Varial Kickflip, which is required for a couple of hard challenges around the map.

If you’ve found yourself struggling to complete these challenges due to the Varial Kickflip or you simply want to learn the trick in general, you’re in the right spot. Below, we’ll show you exactly how to perform a Varial Kickflip in Skate 4.

A majority of the flip tricks in Skate 4 require you to move your stick in a specific direction, or sometimes multiple directions in sequence. There are generally no buttons to press when it comes to flip tricks, as those are reserved for grab tricks. So, for all flip tricks, you just have to nail down your joystick movements.

Of course, this is much easier said than done, as you have to precisely move your joystick in the right direction to pull off the trick you’re aiming for. If you slightly move the joystick in the wrong direction, you could perform an entirely different trick than the one you wanted.

With all of that out of the way, here is the method to perform a Varial Kickflip in Skate 4:

  • Flick the Right Joystick (RS) down and to the left
  • Right after you flick the stick down and left, flick it up and to the right
  • So, in sequence, you’re moving the joystick southwest and then northeast on the dial that’s located on your screen
  • You have to make sure you’re flicking the joystick fluidly and quickly for this to work. If you’re too slow or you move the joystick too far in the wrong direction, you won’t see the Varial Kickflip performed by your character

As with all flip tricks in Skate 4, the quickness with which you flick your joystick is key to pulling off the Varial Kickflip. You’ll definitely have to practice flicking the joystick southwest to northeast in one motion before you can perform a Varial Kickflip with ease.

While your joystick movements are the biggest part of the Varial Kickflip, it’s also important to remember that you need to put your character in the right position for the trick. Unless you’re trying to do a Varial Kickflip in mid-air, you’ll want to ensure your skater has a good amount of speed and few obstacles in their way when trying the trick.

You generally want a flat surface with minimal obstructions when practicing the Varial Kickflip. Then, once you feel more comfortable with the trick, you can attempt it in the middle of a trick combination or over an obstacle.

Like any trick in Skate 4, practice makes perfect, so keep trying the Varial Kickflip in ideal situations until you can do it consistently. Once you don’t need to really pay attention to your joystick movements anymore, you should easily be able to move on to more difficult situations and trick combinations with the Varial Kickflip.
