Skate 4: How to Do the Stiffy

Tired of blasting the same old airs and grabs at your favorite spot in Skate 4? Enter the Stiffy: a clean, stylish grab tweak that instantly elevates your lines. It’s one of those tricks that adds that extra snap of style to your flow.

Sounds easy enough in theory, but like most tricks in this game, it’s all about getting that timing just right. If you keep ending with awkward grabs or bails, I’ve got you covered. In today’s guide, I’ll be breaking down the exact steps to nail a stiffy. So, don’t stress and walk through the guide with me.

What Is A Stiffy?

The Stiffy is a modified grab trick that kicks off with a standard frontside grab, but then tweaks it mid-air with a directional stick input to stretch the board out.  Picture a classic vert skater, just grabbing the board and pointing both legs out straight.

Exact Controls

Here is the exact controls breakdown for doing the Stiffy:

  • Jump or Launch: Get enough airtime (Quarterpipes, bowls, or hips work best)
  • Start a Frontside Grab: Hold L2 (PlayStation) / Hold LT (Xbox)
  • Start the tweak: Once airborne, hold the Right Stick left, while still holding L2/LT (Frontside Grab).
  • Landing: Release L2 / LT just before touchdown.

Step-By-Step Guide

Here is the step-by-step breakdown of doing the Stiffy trick:

  • Set up your line: the Stiffy isn’t a low hop trick, so aim for a ramp or gap that gives you real airtime. The more airtime you’ve got, the easier it is to hold the tweak.
  • Pop and grab: as you launch off the lip, start a frontside grab (Xbox: Hold LT / PlayStation: Hold L2). However, hold off on the tweak just yet.
  • Add the tweak: now, once you’re floating high, hold the Right Stick left. This directional input turns your grab into a proper stiffy. Timing is everything, and doing this too early can cancel the tweak, so wait till you’re fully airborne.
  • Lock it in: next, keep holding both those inputs, and you’ll see your board stretch way out. That’s how a signature Stiffy moves.
  • Spot your landing: release the grab just before touchdown. Nail this and you’ll level out your board in time, earning yourself a clean landing.

Tips To Help You Land It Consistently

  • Hold, rather than flicking: a quick flick often does not register in the game.
  • More airtime helps: more hang time allows for more control and cleaner flow.
  • Timing is crucial: standard grab first, modify second.
  • Style points: pairing the stiffy with a late tweak or a spin looks slick in lines and animation.
