Sixty set to lose their jobs as Sainsbury's shuts down Argos Ebay warehouse in Swansea

Sixty Argos employees look set to lose their jobs as a warehouse in Swansea used for its Ebay sales is poised to close for good.

The retail chain's former High Street unit closed as we knew it last year, with Argos relocating to Sainsbury's in Quay Parade.

But few probably knew that the unit in High Street continued to be used as a warehouse for Argos to process the Ebay sales side of its business.

But staff have told WalesOnline that they have been informed they are set to be made redundant on March 6, 2022, as the company plans to "simplify" its business so that customers can now only shop within Argos stores or its website, with the eBay option being discontinued.

It is understood there were over 60 people working there, with duties of picking and packing orders for the Argos store on the Ebay website. Some have already left for new jobs but the remaining are thought to be staying to accept redundancy pay.

One staff member told WalesOnline it was another job losses blow for the city.

They added: "It seems that when we made over £50 million for the company last year during the pandemic it doesn't matter to them and they are going ahead with the closure."

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's said: “As part of our plan to put food back at the heart of Sainsbury’s, we are simplifying our business so we can focus on what matters most to our customers – lower prices, exciting new products and convenient ways to shop.

“To deliver our plan we must prioritise what we do. We have started talking to our colleagues about what this means for the future of wholesale and the Argos eBay store. We know these conversations may cause uncertainty for our colleagues and we are committing to support them.”
