Sixty pupils and staff self-isolating after Swansea school pupil tests positive for coronavirus

Sixty children and staff at a Swansea primary school are self-isolating after a pupil tested positive for coronavirus.

The 53 children and seven members of teaching staff at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwynderw in West Cross have been identified as contacts of the pupil.

Letters were sent to the parents of affected children at the school on Monday to advise them of what they needed to do.

The pupils who have been asked to self-isolate will return to school on October 1. They are among a number of children who have tested positive for coronavirus since schools re-opened at the end of the summer.

The school has put a continuity of learning plan in place for its children affected, as well as arrangements for those entitled to free school meals.

Swansea Council and the school said they were working closely with Public Health Wales and the NHS Wales test trace and protect service to make sure that all appropriate measures were in place to protect pupils, staff and the wider community.

A spokesman for the council said: "All contacts of the case have been identified and have received appropriate advice to self-isolate.

"Children who have not been identified as a contact do not need to self-isolate and do not require testing for the virus."

A letter has also been sent to parents of children who are not contacts of the child who tested positive, advising them to continue to keep an eye on their children as a precaution.

This comes after 30 pupils and two members of staff at Dunvant Primary School were told to self-isolate after a child tested positive for coronavirus.

Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwynderw is the latest school in Swansea to confirm a positive coronavirus case, with others including Olchfa Comprehensive School, Bishopston Comprehensive School, Cefn Hengoed School and Pontarddulais Comprehensive School.
