Sixty firefighters tackle blaze at flat above shop in Wood Green

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a fire at a flat above a shop on High Road in Wood Green.

The London Fire Brigade was first alerted to reports of a fire at around 7:22am on Tuesday morning. Crews from Hornsey, Tottenham, Holloway and surrounding fire stations were subsequently dispatched to the scene.

Part of the second-floor flat above a shop, understood to be JD Sport, was alight.

Firefighters on the scene told The Standard that access to the flat was extremely difficult to access, requiring extra man power and breathing apparatus.

Residents were evacuated safely and the fire was extinguished at around 8:50am. There are not believed to be any casualties from the incident.

Many pedestrians reported the smell of “charring” in the air, while the pavement remains scattered with glass from the windows of the property - which were smashed to gain access.

Aerial footage shared on social media showed firefighters at work near the former Barclay’s bank on the high street.

The High Road, which was closed at Westbury Avenue, is expected to reopen at 10am on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

This is the second fire above a shop this week. On Monday, a fire broke out at a shop with flats above on Hackney Road in east London.

Footage on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising into the sky, as the roof of the building could be seen ablaze.

Residents were consequently evacuated from the properties.
