Sixth Scots drowning tragedy in less than 24-hours as body of 13-year-old recovered in Lanark

Another child has drowned in a Scots waterway taking the horror total of deaths in the last 24-hours to SIX.

Police recovered the body of a 13-year-old boy last night in the water at Hazelbank, Lanark.

A huge rescue effort was launched but the youngster could not be saved.

The child is the sixth person to die in Scottish waters this weekend.

Cops said three people including a nine-year-old child died at Pulpit Rock, Ardlui last night.

There have also been the deaths of 11-year-old Dean Irvine who drowned in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire yesterday and 16-year-old Connor Markward who lost his life at Loch Lomond on Friday.

A police statement on the Hazelbank incident read: "Police were called around 5.55pm on Saturday, 24 July, 2021 following the report of a concern for person in the water at Hazelbank, Lanark.

"A multi-agency operation was launched and a body has been recovered from the river.

"Formal identification has still to take place but the family of a 13-year-old boy have been made aware.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
