Sixth Kill the Bill protest set to march on BBC in Bristol today

A sixth Kill the Bill protest is due to take place in Bristol city centre today.

Unlike the previous five rallies, today (April 7) protestors will be marching from College Green to the BBC building on Whiteladies Road, in a stand against what they call ‘biased reporting’ from the media on protests so far.

A post on Twitter by Kill the Bill Bath states protests are planned for today and Friday (April 9) in Bristol, and Saturday (April 10) in Bath.

The Twitter post reads: “Bristol College Green to BBC Whiteladies Road.

“Stand up against a police state - and a biased media.

“Wednesday 7th April, 4pm College Green. Wear PPE - practice social distancing.”

Responding to the event, Avon and Somerset Police say: “Police are aware of social media reports of a further protest in Bristol this afternoon, Wednesday 7 April.

“While large gatherings continue to pose risk of spreading COVID-19, an exemption under current regulations allows for peaceful protest provided the organisers have put suitable health and safety precautions in place.

“Specialist liaison officers and neighbourhood teams will be on the ground to work with the protestors to facilitate peaceful protest.”

It comes after a fifth Kill the Bill protest, which took place on Saturday (April 3) saw protestors block the M32.

Several arrests were made later in the evening when police formed a line on Baldwin Street, pushing forward every few minutes in an effort to get protestors to disperse.

The protests so far have taken place as part of a stand against the government's Police and Crime Bill, which includes legislation limiting people's rights to protest.

Today’s event follows another protest happening in the city centre today by taxi drivers, which has brought the city centre to a standstill.

The BBC has been approached for comment.

BristolLive will be bringing you all the latest on the event as it happens.
