Sixth form received £1.6 million to build new classrooms and study spaces

A sixth form college in Wirral has received more than one and a half million to build new classrooms and other facilities.

Birkenhead Sixth Form College, based in Cloughton, said it will use the money to expand existing facilities including new science equipment and labs, and adding an extension to its gym.

A new classroom building will open in the spring of 2023, with six new classrooms and three new study spaces.

The school said it received the money due to rises in student numbers and it recently celebrated record breaking A level results with more than 60% getting top grades. This was 15% higher than the last year exams were sat in 2019 and bucked national trends.

Principal at the college, Mike Kilbride, said: “Our results this year stood out on the national scene, and for yet another year, demand for places was incredibly high, pushing us to the very limits of our capacity.

“The expansion of study facilities follows on from our new building in 2019 on campus being tremendously successful…this new building will act similarly.”

Part of the £1.6 million investment came from the Department of Education with £750,000 going to increase the school’s capacity. More than 1,500 students attend the school.

Councillor Kathy Hodson, Chair of Wirral Council’s education committee said: “Any income is warmly welcomed. We have quite the variety of schools in Wirral which we are extremely proud of and the education department has been great in supporting schools here.

“This will go some way to redress any issues after what has been a challenging time for schools over lockdown.”

Mr Kilbride said: “We would like to thank the Department for Education for their recognition of our strong reputation across the country. This has allowed us the chance to invest in a broad range of facilities and equipment which will further enhance the life opportunities for young people in the area.”
