Sixth core beer in less than two years for start-up brewery

Grimsby’s Docks Beers has added a sixth core beverage to the rapidly expanding range with stout porter Elbow Grease.

The 4.7 per cent creation once again plays on Grimsby’s maritime heritage.

It has been joined by two collaborations with Yorkshire breweries, Shipley-based Salt Beer Factory and Brew York.

Shaz Shadan, Docks Beers director, said: “Elbow Grease carries on our familiar trend of naming beers after the hard work ethic of dock workers past and present.  We recently learned that dockers and porters inspired stout and porter beers. These grafters drank dark, robust, malt filled beer to invigorate themselves for dock labour. The beer style is a perfect embodiment of the spirit of the docks and we needed another powerful can design to do it justice.

“The image, provided by our favourite agency S4, does just that.”

The Elbow Grease can features another impactful drawing by Aylesby-based Kirk Arnold of a docker or ‘lumper’ in front of Trawler GY 246, aka the Grimsby Town. The lumper's ink also includes a boar's head and three fish design, both representative of the town.

Mike Richards, head brewer, told how Elbow Grease has a “decadent blend of malts and Mt Rainier hops which gives a rich and smooth mouthfeel with striking citrus and liquorice flavours”.

“The finish is lingering roasted bitterness,” he said. “We are now serving this beer on draft and in cans just in time for our St Patrick’s day gig.  It is also available online.”

It follows launch trio Hard Graft, Never Say Die and Graveyard Shift, unveiled in August 2018, with lager Overtime and session IPA Wind Power complementing.

The King Edward Street team has created a 6.6 per cent Belgian IPA with Salt, named Zeppelin Bend, and Heidi Plum with the York outfit.
