Sixth confirmed Liverpool coronavirus case confirmed as COVID-19 numbers continue grow

A further case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Liverpool, taking the total number in the city to six.

Liverpool City Council have just confirmed the latest case.

The individual is a contact of an existing case, the local authority confirmed.

It is one of 83 new cases announced today by the Chief Medical Officer for England, with the total number across the UK now standing at 456.

A council spokesperson said: "Public Health England (PHE), Liverpool City Council and the local NHS are working together closely to manage the confirmed cases.

"PHE is contacting people who may have had close contact with the latest confirmed case.

"They will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details if they become unwell in the 14 days after they had contact."

Yesterday we revealed that the fifth case in Liverpool was a top surgeon working at Aintree Hospital, who became infected during a recent trip to Italy.

There are concerns that the doctor had been back in work and operating before he knew he had the disease - and the hospital said it has spoken with patients he came into contact with.
