Six-year-old girl drowns in Kakadu National Park

The girl was swimming in Kakadu National Park when a sudden surge of water swept her away.

Northern Territory Police say a six-year-old girl has drowned in Kakadu National Park.

Police say the girl was swimming at the base of Motor Car Falls with her family and friends at about 5:30pm on Saturday.

A sudden surge of floodwater swept her away.

Officers say her family immediately began searching for her.

Emergency services rushed to the 4WD-only area to help in the search.

Her body was found by the police on Sunday.

In a statement on Monday morning Parks Australia said the death was a "traumatic incident for all involved".

"Our thoughts first and foremost are with the family of the young girl, and with our staff who responded to the incident," said acting director of National Parks Brant Smith.

"Any loss of life is tragic, however the loss of a child is particularly distressing and we are all deeply saddened by this."

The area around Motor Car Falls has now been closed.

"I have asked for the area to remain closed for now on behalf of Traditional Owners, staff and the family as a mark of respect and as we all mourn," Mr Smith said.

"We advise that the Yurmikimik walks including Motor Car Falls, and the Kambolgie campground are currently closed and Gimbat Road is closed from the Kakadu Highway turn off.

"I will advise you when this will open and expect at this stage to not be a long closure, pending advice from NT Police Fire and Emergency Services."
