Six vehicles were taken off the road by police following safety checks on taxis in Swanse a.

A total of 22 licensed hackney carriage and private hire vehicles and drivers were stopped and checked to make sure they were properly licensed and safe to be on the road.

Of these, six were found to be unsafe and not suitable to carry members of the public as passengers.

This means they are unable to operate until the faults are put right and they are inspected again.

The checks were carried out as part of a multi-agency licensing operation with South Wales Police , Swansea Council  taxi licensing and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

The aim was to ensure taxi drivers were maintaining their vehicles and meeting the standards required by law to ensure the safety of passengers.

South Wales police assured the public that all partners involved would continue to work together to make sure drivers and vehicles licensed in Swansea met standards required.

“We would like to thank those drivers and vehicle owners who were involved in the recent operation, for their co-operation and we would also like to remind members of the public that we will continue to take action against those who are not meeting the standards expected of them.

“If you are using taxi and private hire services please remember to always check that the vehicle you are getting into is licensed and if you are in any doubt do not get in."
