Six taken to hospital following 'drink-drive' smash

Seven men were hurt following a serious crash in Salford.

Firefighters using specialist cutting gear spent more than an hour freeing them from two cars involved in the smash on Regent Road.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were scrambled to the scene on Wednesday night.

Firefighters helped extricate four of the occupants from two severely damaged vehicles.

Specialist Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedics treated the casualties at the scene.

Six of the casualties were all taken to hospital, some of them with serious leg and back injuries - pictures from the scene showed both vehicles suffered extensive damage in the smash.

However, it is understood none of those taken to hospital were critically injured.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 11.15pm on Wednesday 8 December 2021, police were called to reports of a collision between two cars on Regent Road, Salford.

"Emergency services attended and seven men were injured.

"A man was arrested."

The man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, the force also confirmed.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At around 11.20pm on Wednesday 8 December, two fire engines from Salford and Moss Side fire stations and a technical response unit from Ashton-under-Lyne attended Regent Road, Salford following reports of a crash involving two cars.

"Crews used specialist equipment to extricate a total of six people from both vehicles.

"They were then transferred to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service and conveyed to hospital.

"Firefighters were at the scene for approximately one and a half hours."

In a statement, a North West Aambulance Service spokesperson said: "Five ambulances, an advanced paramedic, a response vehicle, HART, and an operational commander attended the incident.

"Four patients were extracted from the vehicles, with six patients in total taken to hospital, some suffering serious injuries."
