Six rules for better online meetings in a hybrid workplace

As millions plan their return to the office and balance ‘hybrid’ working, meetings will become even more challenging and keeping them productive and useful will likely remain one of the biggest issues for teams.

Video meeting platform Whereby has revealed the six rules for hosting better virtual meetings in a hybrid world.

While seemingly simple, these are often forgotten in the rush to just ‘jump on a quick video call’.

  1. Be clear about the purpose of the meeting before it starts . If people need to read something before the meeting, put that in the invite. If nothing has been provided, just ask.

  2. Reiterate the purpose at the start of the meeting . Just to make sure everyone’s on the same page.

  3. Structure collaboration sessions in advance . It’s much easier to do it without 20 people watching.

  4. Have one person lead the meeting. Make sure this person actively tries to engage all the participants.

  5. Take notes where everyone can see or edit them . Whereby’s Google Drive integration means you can work together in Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides, then share the link after the meeting.

  6. Keep it short. If you need more than 45 minutes for a meeting, take a short break in the middle to keep everyone fresh.
