Six registered coronavirus deaths last week as figures in Scotland increase

Six people have died from coronavirus across Scotland in the last week.

As of 23 August, there have been a total of 4,222 deaths registered where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The weekly figures, released by the National Records for Scotland (NRS), account for all deaths where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate and are separate to the hospital deaths announced daily by the Scottish Government.

The NRS figures also include all suspected and probable cases of the virus.

In the week, August 17 to 23, there were six deaths where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, an increase of three from the previous week, August 10 to 16.

Four of these deaths took place in a care home and two in a hospital.

Last week was the last time the NRS provided detailed weekly updates.

The body announced that, due to the decrease in the number of deaths, they would provide details monthly reports with only headline figures each week.

It comes as this week the Scottish Government announced the mandatory use of face masks in communal areas of high schools.

The new plans were announced after a rise in concern about the lack of social distancing possible within high school corridors and foyers.
