Six profound pictures that capture the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on Ireland

It may feel like a lot longer but the reality is that we have really only been dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in Ireland since around February when the first confirmed cases were detected.

Since then the country has battled through lockdowns, adjusted to working from home, and watched as businesses

We all developed new social habits as we got used to terms things like social distancing and regular hand washing.

And of course we cannot forget how tough this year has been on so many.

Countless people have lost a love one while others struggled through the terrible illness that is Covid-19.

Meanwhile many of us dealt with the social isolation that came with coronavirus restrictions.

2020 has proven to be a huge challenge for humanity however hope still remains that better days are ahead as a vaccine could be around the corner.

With that we're taking a look at some of the most profound images that emerged in Ireland throughout the pandemic.

Croke Park becomes a test centre

While drive thru Covid test centres are something we are all now used to seeing the beloved Croke Park sports ground being used for medical reasons stopped many in their tracks.

What startled people the most was that it was not being used for sport any time soon and definitely instilled fear as to what lay head.

The first Covid briefing

Covid briefings are now part of our daily lives however there was a time when people like Dr Tony Holohan were not household names.

They soon became daily viewing for people all across the country as they anxiously waited to see the latests figures.

They have since been reduced to just two per week however they are likely here to stay for a good bit longer.

The empty streets of Dublin

This is an image that we still see every day but one that is hard to get used to.

The Irish capital is always teeming with life no matter what time of the year however since the pandemic the streets of Dublin are scarcely populated as businesses remain shut and people are encouraged to stay in doors.

Hopefully this won't be the case for much longer.

A new government

As if things weren't different enough, Ireland got a change in government and a historic one at that.

For the first time Civil War parties Fianna Fail and Fine Gael agreed to enter a coalition with the Green Party and introduced us to the term rotating Taoiseach.

Fianna Fail's Micheal Martin took over from Leo Varadkar as the pair agreed to work together following a historic election. Seeing these two chatting is all too common now however it can be hard to remember they were political rivals not so long ago.

The absence of the Dail chamber and introduction of the convention centre is also a new image that we have grown accustomed to seeing.

Empty airports

So many of us have had to make immeasurable sacrifices this year. One smaller sacrifice that many have made is not getting to travel or jet off on a holiday this year.

And with that came shocking images emerged of empty terminals as flights around the world remain grounded as we are all encouraged to stay local.

The parting glass

And image that captured the pain of the nation and stopped many in their tracks.

Heartbroken Padraig Byrne was forced to climb on a hospital bench and peer through a window to say his last goodbye to his brother who died from Covid-19.

The image Padraig trying to get a glimpse of Francis, 70, on April 1 shows the devastating impact of coronavirus on Irish families.

While we hope to put these times behind us we must never forget the pain that so many suffered/.
