Six people rescued over weekend off Howth coast as sunny weather continues

People have been urged to remain vigilant around water after two boats suffered malfunctions during the weekend.

Howth RNLI made the plea after a volunteer lifeboat crew assisted in the case of two separate emergencies this week.

The first incident involved a sailing yacht and occurred on Friday shortly after 9pm.

Three people were reduced from on board the sailing yacht, which had suffered from engine failure on its passage from Malahide to Howth.

The boat was promptly tugged back by the crew to Howth Harbour.

A second call by a member of the public about a motorboat in difficulty early this morning was also received by Dublin Coast Guard.

Howth RNLI assisted three people on board the motorboat, which was drifting close to rocks east of Howth Harbour.

The lifeboat towed the vehicle and its occupants safely back to the harbour. Howth Coast Guard was also deployed to assist with the incident.

Howth RNLI's inshore lifeboat helm Tom Ryan said: “The member of the public did the right thing in calling the Coast Guard straight away. When the winds are blowing onshore and a boat is broken down, every minute counts.

“Our volunteer crew responded quickly once the pager went off and we launched the lifeboat within minutes."

As Dublin continues to bask in the sunshine, the crew are urging people to act safely around water.

Boat owners are asked to ensure their engines are well maintained and that they have access to an anchor before setting sail.
