Barton Highway reopens after seven hours following crash

Ambulance are on scene at a two-car crash on the Barton Highway in Murrumbateman.

Update at 8pm: The Barton Highway has been reopened in both directions following a two-car crash at Murrumbateman about midday.

Update at 4pm: Seven people have been taken to Canberra Hospital after a two-car crash on the Barton Highway at Murrumbateman.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said a man in his 50s sustained a serious leg injury while three other patients sustained head, abdominal, chest, neck and shoulder injuries.

The others sustained minor injuries and seat belt lacerations.

The incident between McIntosh Circuit and Murrumbateman Road began about midday on Saturday, leaving the highway closed in both directions.

Live Traffic NSW said the highway was expected to remain closed until late this evening.

Police and Transport NSW remain at the scene.

Motorists are urged to use diversions and allow extra travel time of 60-90 minutes.

Diversions

  • Northbound: Barton Highway, Federal Highway, Hume Highway
  • Southbound: Hume Highway, Federal Highway

Only light vehicles are able to use Murrumbateman Road, Sutton Road and the Federal Highway.

Earlier: Seven people are being treated for injuries after a two-car crash on the Barton Highway at Murrumbateman.

Emergency services were called to the scene between McIntosh Circuit and Murrumbateman Road about midday on Saturday.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the patients were still being treated at the scene with two people sustaining serious injuries.

The spokesman said four crews were currently on scene where the Barton Highway is closed in both directions.

A NSW Police spokesman said they were providing traffic control with reports one person may still be trapped in a car.

Fire and Rescue NSW is also on scene.

NSW Live Traffic urges motorists to use diversions in place and to allow extra travel time.

  • Southbound: Hume Highway, Federal Highway

Motorists should allow between an extra 60 and 90 minutes' travel time.
