Six people have been taken to hospital after a Volkswagen Polo crashed into a tree

Six people have been taken to hospital after a car crashed into a tree in Rochdale.

One woman has been left with serious injuries following the smash at 5am today.

It took place on Bolton Road, close to Springfield Park.

Witnesses reported seeing the car, a grey Volkswagen Polo, on its side wedged up against the fencing.

The road was closed for about three hours following the incident.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called shortly before 5am to a collision involving one vehicle, a grey Volkswagen Polo. Six people were taken to hospital, one female with serious injuries. 

"The road has reopened."

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted earlier: "Bolton Road, Rochdale is currently closed in both directions due to a police incident between Marland Fold and Heywood Cemetery.

"Please use alternative route."
