Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo - review

One of my greatest fears is reading books that many people love. The reason for this insane fear is because when I pick up a book that many readers love I feel pressure to love the book and this is normally not the case – I end up disliking the book. Therefore I was quite apprehensive when I started this book (another reason for this is I haven’t read the Grisha trilogy) and I was worried that I would lack knowledge of the world the book is set in.

However I read the book anyway. When I started the book I was really confused, I didn’t know what was happening. This confusion lasted until the middle of the book and I’m very disappointed that the plot wasn’t clearer. The introduction of the characters was too quick, I would say, there were too many characters being introduced at the same time and it just lead me to forget the characters. Moreover the characters’ names were very hard to pronounce and so it made me forget the characters, also it meant that I had to keep flicking back.

On the other hand the plot of this novel is unique. In YA fantasy you don’t see any variation and this book is very different. This book takes place in the Grisha world where there are some people with powers and others without. Kaz Brekker has an offer that will give him ultimate wealth but it’s an impossible mission. Along with five other companions he goes on a heist that will either ruin his life or immensely improve it.

Halfway through the book I finally understood the plot and I was drawn in. I love how Bardugo writes about the characters’ past because it makes the character more realistic and as a reader you can connect with the characters.

Overall I enjoyed this book and I would recommend this book to any fantasy lover, read it!
