Six Nations TV pundit Maggie Alphonsi hits out after sexist viewers question her working on men's tournament

ITV Six Nations pundit Maggie Alphonsi has hit out at some rugby fans who made sexist remarks about her appearing as a lead expert on the opening day of the men's Six Nations.

Alphonsi and commentator Danielle Waterman were subjected to a number of sexist remarks by viewers online questioning why they were working on the men's tournament.

One viewer wrote: "Let female pundits and co-commentators comment on female rugby matches whilst men’s rugby sticks to male commentators etc - female pitched voices spoil the whole game! Enough said!"

Another said: "Its getting ridiculous all this box ticking, another channel with sound turned off, what does she know about men's professional international rugby union?"

And, amid many examples of sexism, one male viewer wrote on Twitter: "Just to get in the spirit of modern feminism, I’d like to suggest the female co commentator on the rugby pops off and put the kettle on for half time."

Former England international Alphonsi is one of the game's most respected former players and was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2016 for her achievements. She played in two World Cups and won seven successive Six Nations titles.

She posted on Twitter: "A good afternoon in the studio for ITAvFRA. As expected tho, many sexist comments about women working on men’s rugby.

"Those who comment are not worthy a response. Rugby is not a gender, it’s a sport and my accolades far out way (sic) what any of those sexist individuals have achieved!"

Alphonsi appeared alongside Wales legend Gareth Thomas for ITV's coverage of the opening Six Nation match between Italy and France.

He added: "I can’t believe people still feel their opinions aren’t valid based on their gender, well I can, but, what I can’t believe is how they get electricity to their caves."
