Six Nations: Fin Baxter emerges as potential England option amid Joe Marler injury

England and Harlequins are still sweating on the extent of Joe Marler’s arm injury, with the experienced loosehead still a Six Nations doubt.

Quins will turn to the fast-rising Fin Baxter in Marler’s absence – and perhaps England could follow suit.

England will definitely be without the injured Bevan Rodd for the full Six Nations, while Ellis Genge faces a fitness race for the opener against Italy in Rome on February 3.

Mako Vunipola will be available for the Italy match but is now banned for the full month’s build-up, so will not have had any recent club rugby with Saracens in preparation.

England will want to lean on Marler’s experience and durability should the 33-year-old shake off his arm problem in time for Six Nations duty.

But just as Baxter will start Quins’ Premiership trip to Newcastle on Friday night, the 21-year-old could also be an option for England to consider.

“Fin Baxter for Harlequins is playing well,” said England head coach Steve Borthwick.

“Joe speaks highly of him. The really good players know who is another potential player to come through.

“If you chat to Joe he speaks really positively about Fin Baxter and what potential he has.”
