Six more patients die from coronavirus in North East hospitals

There have been six more coronavirus deaths recorded at North East hospitals in the last 24 hours.

The new figures were released by the NHS on Friday as the Department of Health confirmed that the UK death toll had reached almost 34,000.

They said its figures showed 33,998 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Thursday, up by 384 from 33,614 the day before.

It was also announced on Friday that the reproduction number (R) had risen to 0.7-1.0.

In the North East, there was a decrease in daily deaths with just six being recorded. Earlier in the week there had been totals of 12, nine and eight.

Here is the breakdown of all deaths in the region by trust:

County Durham and Darlington - 0

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 0

Gateshead - 2

Northumbria - 0

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 0

Newcastle - 2

North Tees and Hartlepool - 1

South Tees - 1

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys - 0
