Saturday marked six months since the closure last October of Tsukiji Market in Chuo Ward, Tokyo. As more than half of the distinctive fan-shaped roof has been demolished, it is now little more than a shadow of the historic riverside fish market, which operated for 83 years.

The work to demolish the market's 155 buildings will be continued until February 2020. Then the site will be used as a depot for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, which start in July 2020.

After the Olympics, it is envisaged that international conference halls, sports and cultural centers and other facilities will be gradually built by the 2040s.
