Six-month Hucknall Road roadworks a 'massive inconvenience' and a 'fiasco'

Residents have spoken out about the disruption being caused by road works on Hucknall Road, describing them as a "massive inconvenience" and a "fiasco".

The roadworks outside the City Hospital have been going on since September 20 and are to last for six months - despite signs in the area saying they will take only 16 weeks.

There is also work to be done nearby on Valley Road, with cycle and pedestrian improvements due to be finished this autumn.

Rachel Lawrence, 45, a sales assistant who lives in the area, told Nottinghamshire Live: “Something is always being done, why couldn’t all these roadworks have been done during lockdown?

"They just have to be done when everyone’s returning to work and children are back at school. It’s a massive inconvenience and they’re going to be going on for a while.”

Keith Espina, 25, who works at the City Hospital, said: “It’s upsetting because roadworks of course cause traffic - but the work has to be done.”

Leo Thomas, 43, a delivery driver, doesn’t live in the area but has to drive past the roadworks to get to work.

He said: “It’s not been causing a disruption yet for me but I can understand why people living nearby may be upset, it’s not convenient and if you look around, it looks like work is being done all over the place.”

One resident, who chose not to be named, said there didn't appear to be a proper plan in place for the roadworks.

He said: “The roadworks are a fiasco, the city council don’t know what they’re doing, there’s no coordination to these works, no plan and nothing seems to be linked or thought through, it’s just a big waste of money.”

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “We are carrying out work along the stretch of Hucknall Road alongside the City Hospital campus to introduce a segregated cycle lane, an improved bus/cycle lane, resurfaced and widened pavements, improved road surfaces and markings and new trees.

"It is the first phase of one of the projects being funded thanks to the council’s successful bid for the Transforming Cities grant from the Government – with further bus and cycle improvements being worked up for consultation.

“This work started two weeks ago and is expected to last around six months. We have consulted widely on the proposals, including with local residents, as well as information being available on our Transport Nottingham website, in leaflets delivered in the local area and in e-newsletters.”
