Six men died after travelling from Ireland to fight for terrorist groups just before Lisa Smith went to Syria

Six men died after travelling from Ireland to fight alongside militant groups shortly before Lisa Smith left for Syria.

They travelled after being recruited and are believed to be the “tip of the iceberg” in terms of Irish based jihadists.

Two promising young medical students from National University of Ireland Galway, Tariq Mohainuteen and Mustpaha Al Hayani engaged on different fronts as part of ISIS.

Four others also travelled to join Islamic groups in Syria where they died fighting for different factions. Palestinian Alaa Ciymeh, 26, who was raised in Dublin and who is believed to be connected to ISIS recruiters, travelled o Syria where he was killed fighting for an unknown militia.

Another Palestinian who also travelled to Syria, Hisham Habbash, 29, was killed one month after Ciymeh. Hudhaifa el Sayed from Droegheda was also killed by the Syrian regime in December 2012 after following infamous militiaman Mehdi al-Harati to Syria where the Irish Libyan had established a fighting unit called Liwa al Umma. Another Irish Libyan. Shamseddin Gaidan. was just 16 when he left Navan to join rebels in Syria.

The teenager is believed to have died in spring 2013.

Former Defence Forces member Smith also travelled to Syria that year.

She who spent some weeks with Al Qaeda fighters in Syria – marrying one days after her arrival – claims she didn’t meet Irish people during her trip in 2013.

Meanwhile, ISIS shot dead Armenian priest Fr Hovsep Bedoya and his father Abraham in the Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli near the border with Turkey on Monday, the Vatican News Service said.
